DIY Shoe Charms for Back to School
If you’re looking for a simple way to add personality to your favorite pair of shoes, DIY charms are the perfect project. Not only are they fun to make, but they’re also completely customizable—whether you want something colorful, chic, or totally one-of-a-kind. With just a few basic craft supplies, you can design charms that show off your style (and save a little money compared to store-bought versions). In this post, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know to make your own shoe charms!
This is a fun, easy project for anyone, but I crafted these with my niece on her shoes and she LOVED picking out her own charms.
P.S. if you’d rather buy instead DIY, I’ve linked cute, shoppable charms at the bottom of this post.
my top three tips:
The lace clasps are ESSENTIAL. At first, I didn’t use them and my charms fell off their jump rings almost immediately once I started walking. I ordered these for take two, and the charms are much more secure and haven’t fallen off! They are sized perfectly to fit shoe laces, and they make it easier to remove your shoe charms or put them on a different pair.
Don’t be afraid to mix and match! Whether that means using a funky color palette, or just mixing up the types of charms you use — a variety of charms in different shapes and sizes will look best.
You don’t have to JUST use charms. Think buttons, pins, a string of beads — unexpected embellishments make a statement. My favorite “charm” on my shoes is actually the looped safety pin I added my name to. Get creative and have fun!
